    Billing Period

    The billing period for a data plan is 30 days, beginning from the time of activation. At the end of the billing period, Hologram deducts the device’s plan amount from your account balance.

    As long as there is a remaining balance in your account, the device’s service will automatically renew at the end of a billing period. If your account balance cannot cover the cost of renewing a device’s data plan, you will receive an email notification 24 hours before the end of the billing period.

    For pay-as-you-go plans and data usage above what your plan provides, we charge your account in real time as you use the data. If your account balance reaches zero, we may pause your data plan without warning. To prevent this from happening, we suggest configuring Automatic Refill.

    Usage Data

    The usage page in the dashboard contains reports and visualizations of your device activity:

    From this page, you can view data usage on a per-device basis as well as aggregated across your account. You can also download CSV usage reports.

    Automatic Refill

    Hologram’s Automatic Refill feature allows users automatically charge a credit card on file whenever the account balance gets below an amount designated by the user. Though it’s not required, we strongly recommend enabling this feature to avoid service interruption.

    To enable Automatic Refill, navigate to the Billing page on the dashboard. Make sure you have a valid payment method on file under Billing Overview, then check the Enable Auto-Refill checkbox. You can then set the refill amount and threshold.

    Data and Overage Limits

    You can limit your usage charges by configuring a limit to how much data a device can consume during a billing period.

    • Monthly plans: an overage limit defines the number of bytes the device can consume after exhausting the plan’s allowance.
    • Pay-as-you-go plans: a data limit defines the total number of bytes the device can consume during a billing period.

    Change the data limit for a device from the Plan and Coverage view on the device’s dashboard page:

    Note: A device's total usage in the current billing cycle is calculated after each data session is ended by the device. Intersession data usage limiting will not be immediate as live usage is updated in ~5MB increments from our carrier partners. As such, there can be a delay between when the data limit pause is sent to the network and when the device stops transmitting.

    You can also apply overage limits to more than one device from the device list page. Select which devices to apply the limit to, and select Manage->Set data limits/overage. Note that the limits apply per-device, not on total usage.

    Bulk device actions

    Pausing Data

    Pausing a device’s data allows you to temporarily disable all connectivity for the device. This means the corresponding SIM will not be able to send or receive SMS, or connect to the internet. This may be useful if you expect a device to be inactive for a period of time and want to ensure you don’t get any usage charges.

    While a device is in a paused state, monthly plan charges still apply. When pausing a device for an extended period, you should first convert it to a pay-as-you-go plan, so that the only charge is the SIM base cost.

    Device Phone Numbers

    A phone number allows you to send an SMS to your Hologram-connected device from any SMS-compatible device. Phone numbers are not necessary to deliver an SMS to your device via the Dashboard or API.

    You can buy a phone number for a device from the device’s Hologram Dashboard page. The monthly cost for the number depends on the number’s country code.

    Note that the device will be able to respond to the SMS, but the response may show up as originating from a different number. This is a special, internal number so you should be sure to send all messages to the purchased phone number instead of the internal number.

    Professional Edition

    The Professional Plan combines Hologram’s global coverage with connectivity tools and pricing for organizations to make connecting IoT devices simpler and scaling faster.

    Live usage & connection data

    Hologram Professional Edition devices provide real-time status of connection state* to the internet. Hologram receives this stream of information as devices actively connect anywhere on Hologram’s global network through an integration built with its network partners. The real-time connection data is displayed on the dashboard as indicated in the screenshot below and available via the API.

    Data Session and Connection Status

    Device data session and connection information updates are triggered each time a SIM successfully opens a packet switched data session on the Hologram network. This indicates that the device has (1) successfully registered to a cell tower (2) attached to Hologram’s APN gateway and (3) is connected and ready to begin transmitting internet data over the network.     Once the data session is established, the device will transition from a state of Live to Connected. This Connected connection state will remain until the data session ends.

    IMEI

    Each time a data session is attached, the IMEI of the cellular module used to connect will also be displayed. IMEI stands for: International Mobile Equipment Identifier. This information can be used to validate SIM deployments and manufacturing processes with available internal information.

    Cell Tower ID Location

    An approximate GPS coordinate position is provided based on the cell tower a device is registered to for data transmission. This GPS location of the cell tower’s epicenter is approximated through a global crowd-sourced database of cell towers and network coverage. Location precision will vary based on the number of contributed recordings, but is typically within 1km in urban areas with good network coverage. This information can be helpful for identifying rough geographic location or validating that fixed assets remain in place. However, this information is not recommended for use as sole source of device location and retrieval.

    Note: This cell tower location is different than the Cell Locate functionality available via the Nova and Dash which use cell triangulation based on available towers in the area.

    Flexible Data Rate

    The Flexible Data Rate is a single rate for all networks in Hologram’s standard global coverage area of 170+ countries and ~400 carriers. This includes most countries in North America, Europe, and Asia and support for South America and Africa. Great for IoT devices with lower volume data use cases. The Flexible Data rate begins at $0.40/MB only when data is transmitted on the network (billed by the kB) no matter which country or partner a device connects to on Hologram’s network. Also, Scaled Volume Discounts are automatically applied when organizations reach different levels of # of devices on the Hologram platform, starting at 100.     Note: This is closest to Hologram's previous Pay-as-you-go plans and combines the previous Zone 1 and 2 coverage zones by default for all professional plans with a lower data rate.

    Flexible Pools

    Flexible Pools are monthly pre-paid pools of data that can be shared across all Professional Plan devices. Starting at 100MB monthly pools, organizations can set pools of data to save on data through a lower effective $/MB rate.

    When a Flexible Pool is setup on an organization, any data usage is first drawn down from the pool before any data is billed at the Flexible Data Rate on a pay-as-you-go basis.

    Customers can manage their organization’s Flexible Data Pools from the Dashboard in the Settings > Plans menu as shown in the screenshots below.

    Flexible pools are billed at the beginning of each month and any changes can be scheduled to begin at the 1st of the following month.

    Scaled Volume Discounts

    Scaled Volume Discounts are automatically applied discounts to both monthly active device and Flexible Data Rates, based on an organization’s number of active devices on the Hologram platform. Starting at only 100 devices, customers can save up to 33% on their overall connectivity budget for their IoT device fleet.

    Customers can view their current path to more Scaled Volume Discount milestones from the Dashboard in the Settings > Plans menu as shown in the screenshots below.

    Hologram Pilot Plans

    Hologram Pilot SIM and plans are provided to connect a SIM and try out Hologram’s IoT cellular platform for free. Each SIM includes 1MB of data each month anywhere on Hologram’s global network.

    By default during activation, a data limit will be set for no overage of 1MB each month. However, if the limit is removed that Pilot SIM can use data over 1MB at the Flexible Data rate of $0.40/MB
